History
The first inhabitants (of Tennessee) were a rebellious pack of Iroquois Indians who later become known as the
'Cherokee'.
In 1540 a Spanish Explorer by the name of Hernando DeSoto happened across our beautiful
State in search of treasure, only to find the Cherokee Indians who had already established their lives and homes here in the Smoky Mountains.
In 1769 Tennessee saw its first 'settlement' when William Bean built his cabin on Boone's Creek near the
Watauga River and several families from North Carolina joined him.
On June 1, 1796 Tennessee became the 16th State to join the union with over 60,000 State
residents.
On December 26, 1835 an Indian Treaty was signed which resulted in the "Trail of Tears"
(removal of our Indian predecessors.) They were "herded into stockades and then 'set toward the setting sun'"marched across our State by the government for relocation
purposes in the State of Oklahoma.
In 1843 Nashville became the official "permanent" capital of the State.
In 1861 Tennessee became the last State to join the confederacy.
In 1925 The Grand Ole Opry begins.
In 1933 Tennessee Valley Authority created.
In 1937 The Smoky Mountain Arts & Crafts Community was created in Gatlinburg,
Tennessee.
In 1942- Oak Ridge Atomic Energy plant is built.
In 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis.
In 1971 the Natural Areas Act began protecting over 71,000 acres of the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park.
In 1982 Knoxville hosts the World's Fair. Nissan's auto plant opens in Smyrna.
In 1996 East Tennessee's
Ocoee River was host to the White water Competition (Olympic Slalom, Canoeing and Kayaking Events ) of the World Olympics.
